The area occupied by the colony is tiny !! The patch of cattails where the birds nest is no bigger than my living room. The noise they generate is considerable. I cannot imagine what a colony of thousands would sound like - So different from Red-winged Blackbirds. But it is a great place to get some up-close field experience with the birds.

The colony is more west than south of the Jacumba library. On Google Earth, the pond/wetland area that they occupy appears considerably larger back when the satellite photograph was taken.
